The European Space Agency (ESA) today will demonstrate a prototype of what they call “the multimedia car radio of the future” at the Noordwijk Space Expo in the Netherlands. Unlike XM and Sirius’ satellite radio services, this system won’t require the launching of new satellites – instead it will use existing communications satellites transmitting in the Ku-band.
The satellite radio system employs a flat mobile antenna that is designed to be embedded into the roof the car. It also utilizes on-board caching (through a hard-drive or solid-state memory) to prevent interuption of service when the satellite signal is obstructed. This caching of course also allows for time-shifting abilities like pause and rewind of live radio.

Of course, to get Pong, you have to add a $30 upgrade, but hey … retro gaming action on your $1k machine! It may seem a bit like overkill, but at least when you play Pong it does trigger different sequences and effects. No word yet on if you can get the original ‘dit dit’ sounds of Pong or not, but you can trigger a nice little drum riff and scratch if you want. Think Moby has one of these?

Chinese company AOC has launched its uber-sleek ultrathin V500 portable media player which is slightly thicker than Apple’s latest nano. It features a shiny silver enclosure, a 2.4 –inch QVGA LCD, USB 2.0 and can handle a good no. of media playing duties. It plays all the audio files which are in MP3, WAV and WMA format and on the video front it can play the files which are in AVI and MPEG4 format.
It does not have any fancy gaming options similar to its competitors but it doubles as a JPEG viewer. The V500 should hit the market soon with storage capacities ranging from 128MB to 2GB but we are not informed regarding the price.

If you love using your cellphone as a media player then you will face some problems and one major problem is the lack of storage space. You cannot use it as a full-time mobile entertainment center as the 1GB or 2GB memory card doesn’t store enough movies or music. The BluOnyx Mobile Content Sever allows you to stream music or movies to your phone for on-the-fly playback as though the data was on the BluOnyx and it features SD, WiFi and USB.
It holds the data from 1GB to 40GB and can be streamed to any cellphone, PMP or any device as long as it’s been authenticated. The Digital Campfire looks like a good solution for carrying around with you while we travel and its price range from $99 to $250.
